As my kiddos get older, the more I’m all about making memories together as a family. Not saying that I wasn’t a fan when my kids were little. It just feels different the older that they get and realizing that they are close to leaving our nest.

If you are itching to have a fun family game night, try playing Spicy Uno! It is a very interactive game that makes it fun for everyone!

Spicy Uno Rules:

Before you learn how to play, know that all of the regular Uno rules still apply. You start by dealing 7 cards to each player, then you start out by playing Uno. I have listed the different rules below to spice up your Uno game!

Spicy Uno Rules: 

• If someone plays a O, that person can choose who they would like to swap hands with. (this is optional, they can choose not to.)
• If someone plays a 6, all players slap the deck. The last person that hits the deck has to pick up 2 cards.
• If someone plays a 7, all players need to be silent until someone plays another 7. If anyone speaks during that time, they need to pick up one card. If you are down to one card during a silent round, you hold up one finger for Uno instead of saying it.
• If someone plays a draw 2 or +2, the next player can stack another +2 to the pile (if they have one). This can continue around the circle until it gets to a player that doesn’t have a +2 card to play. That player will then pick up the amount of +2’s that were played. For example: if four +2 cards were played, that player would pick up 8 cards.
• The above rule also applies to Wild +4 cards.
• If you have an identical card in your hand to the one that was played, you can play it at any time as long as you place it before the next player is able to play their card. Then the round will continue with the player next to the player that placed the last card.

What do you think?! All of the rules look intimidating. But I promise, it’s super easy once you get going!

To say my kiddos love popcorn would be huge understatement! They LOVE popcorn. It’s really our go-to treat so naturally this popcorn bar was a huge hit. And the best part? It’s so simple to put together and looks amazing, making it perfect for any type of gathering. From a family movie night to a big party…this popcorn bar aims to please.

Popcorn Bar-

How cute is this DIY popcorn bar? And seriously guys, it’s soooo tasty. I wanted to spice up a family movie night so I decided to put together this fun popcorn bar and it was a huge hit. Everyone absolutely loved it and kept going back for different combos.

Here’s a shopping list to get things started. Buy whatever you think sounds good with popcorn, but here are some possibilities. Remember to plan for sweet and savory so you have something for everyone.

As far as putting this together, I used glass jars to display all of the options. I love using canning jars because I always have them on hand and they are adorable. These chalkboard tags worked great on the jars letting everyone know what their options were.

I had these cute popcorn bowls for my guests to build their perfect bowl of popcorn. But if you don’t have bowls, paper sacks work great. Simply fold down the edges and they will work perfectly.

I’m a game person! Seriously, I love all the games and are up for playing them anytime. Some of my favorite games to play are card games.

I love them because with one or two decks of cards you can play so many different games. I have gathered 10 of my favorite card games with a couple of new ones thrown in too. Such fun card games, it’s hard to choose which one to try first!

Fun Card Games:

I know there are some trickier card games to learn, but these are not them. I have 10 super fun card games that are easy to learn and a blast to play!

How to Play Garbage:

Garbage is a fun and simple game making it perfect for your whole family. I love this game because it’s so simple to learn. If the players know their numbers, they can play this card game.

How to Play Spicy Uno:

Spicy Uno is a fast and crazy version of traditional Uno. It’s seriously so fun to play and even more simple to learn. If you know basic Uno rules, spicy Uno is a cinch to learn. Break out the Uno cards and give this fun version a try.

How to Play Nertz:

Nertz is a quick paced card game and such a blast to play. It’s really fun for the teens because it can get competitive. It’s a lot like a game of solitaire, but played in groups and is fast. If you haven’t played, time to give it a try. Such fun.

Crazy 8’s is a card game everyone recognizes by name, but seems like very few actually know how to play! But what a fun card game for your kiddos. If you haven’t played Crazy 8’s, now is the time.

Golf: A Fun Card Game for Families:

Do you love golf? Well, if you do this may be a fun game for you…and if not this may be a fun game for you! Just like a real game of golf, you are trying to keep your score as low as possible. Give it a try and see how low you can go.

How to Play Knock:

Knock is a Rummy type game. So if you love Rummy you will love Knock. Perfect for a smaller group 2-6 players.

Does your family love to play games? If so, you need to introduce them to this card game. I call it President but I’ve also heard it called Scum. It’s really so fun and so simple, it will quickly become a favorite.

I’m all about making fun moments and for me, games is a huge part of that. I seriously can’t get enough of them. Such a fun way to play and laugh together. This fun President card game will give you lots of laughs and maybe even a little friendly competition.

Let’s get to teaching you how to play President!

President Card Game:

Supplies Needed:

• One Standard Deck of Playing Cards (52 Playing Cards and Two Jokers)

Objective:

Be the first player to get rid of all of your cards from your hand. The first player to do this is the President and next player is the Vice President. The last two players finished will be the Vice Scum and Scum. This will matter in the next round.

Ages: We play with kiddos ages 8 and up. You really can decide if your kiddos are old enough to understand the game, or they can be on a team with another player.

Number of Players: 3 and up. You can play with as many people as you want. If playing with more than 8-10 players you may want another deck of cards.

Card Rank for President:

The cards will rank as follows from highest to lowest: 2 Jokers, 3, 2, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, and 4. You can decide which joker will be the highest joker and it will be the most powerful card.

How to Play President:

• Before you start, choose a President, Vice President, Scum and Vice Scum (if you are only playing with 4 or less players, play without “Vices”). You can choose by rolling a dice (highest rolls are President) or choosing cards (again, highest are President).
• Deal all of the cards, one at a time to each player. Dealer starts dealing to the player on their left and circles around until all cards are dealt. I usually make dealing a job for the Scum player.

• Each player can look at their cards and arrange them in order from highest (Joker or 3’s) to lowest (4).
• The Scum give the President their two best cards (the cards worth the highest value) and the President gives the scum any two cards they choose. For instance, the President may have three 4’s and wishes to keep them together. The Scum doesn’t get to choose.
• The Vice Scum gives their best card to the Vice President and the Vice President gives one card of their choice to the Vice Scum. This happens before the round begins. (You can see how happy this exchange makes the President…look at that grin)

• The President will be the first to play a card. The idea of the game is to play cards according to numerical value from least to greatest. If the first player plays one card, that round each player may only play one card. If the first person plays two cards, that round can only have doubles played. The person who begins the round dictates how many cards can be played. So in the example below, the first player played double 8’s. That round only doubles can be played and they need to increase in numerical value.

• The object of the game is to play all of your cards. So, the first player can play any card they choose. The next player needs to beat that card by playing a higher value card. The round continues until it goes back to the original player or if no one can beat the card played (because it’s higher than what anyone wants/can play).
• If a player plays a card that no one can beat, that player clears the pile and starts the next round. If the round continues until it circles back to the original player who played the first card, they will clear the pile and start the next round again. There is some strategy deciding when to play the high cards. You want to be able to play your cards first, but if you end up with only low cards left you will have a hard time getting them played. So, you may want to hold onto your high cards until others have played their cards so you can take some rounds.

How to Win:

Be the first player to play all of your cards. The first player will be the President for the next round. But the game continues until everyone has played their cards. You will sit in the order you got your cards played. So first player is President, second player is Vice President down to the last players who will be Vice Scum and Scum. If you are only playing with 4-5 players you may want to eliminate the Vice positions. If you are playing with a large group the middle players will be “Common” players. They are just in the middle until they move up or down.

That’s it, you are ready to play.

I’m always looking for ways to connect with our boys but with a wide range of ages (ok-let’s be honest, with teenagers) it can be hard to find things that are fun and that everyone will enjoy!

But this was a good one. If you need a family fun day or something to do on a Saturday night with the kids, why not try to make your own chocolates? When you bust out all of the supplies for this project you’ll have everyone hooked! It’s fun and it’s easy and your whole family is going to enjoy this one.

There’s a place near me that has a chocolate dipping workshop that makes a great date night or fun family activity, but it’s a little pricey and you’re limited on how much you can make. So I thought it would be fun to try this at home and it worked out GREAT!

Want to try it yourself? Here’s what you need to know.

Make Your Own Chocolate Bar:

The biggest thing to know is that you can do this any way you want. Pick the supplies that you think your family will enjoy and make it work for you. But here’s some of what we did.

Chocolate Dipping Supplies: (some affiliate links below)

First, you need some chocolate to melt for dipping. Here are the three main types, although you could get colored too.

• Milk Chocolate Melting Chocolate
• White Chocolate Melting Chocolate
• Dark Chocolate Melting Chocolate

Then you might want some large items to dip in the chocolate. Here are some ideas:

• Oreos
• Nutter Butters
• Marshmallows
• Pretzel Rods
• Twinkies
• Bacon
• Doughnut Holes

I also had some toppings to sprinkle on these things. You could get any type of candy and crush it up, but here are some ideas:

• Health Bar
• Butterfinger
• Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
• Mini M&Ms
• Sprinkles
• Salt
• Caramel
• Coconut
• Crushed Nuts

And you could try some fillings:

• Coconut
• Peanuts
• Almonds
• Peanut Butter
• Nutella

Other important chocolate making supplies: 

• To make the small chocolates, I used some of these mini baking cups. They were perfect!
• Fork and spoon
• Silpat mat or other non-stick surface

Once you’ve got all of your supplies gathered, melt your chocolate. I just put it in the microwave for 30-60 seconds, then stirred and heated again till melted.

Then start dipping away! My family dipped things like Oreos by placing them fully in the chocolate and raising them up with a fork and shaking gently until the excess chocolate came off. You can also gently swipe the bottom of it across the top of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. If you want to add toppings (and you do!), make sure to do it while the chocolate is still soft. You can also drizzle another color of chocolate on it.

To make chocolates, grab one of your little baking cups and put some melting chocolate in the bottom. Then add a filling like peanut butter or coconut. Pour some more chocolate on top and let it set up.

You can really go crazy mixing and matching toppings and fillings!

You can make whatever chocolates you want, but here are a few ideas:

• Chocolate with peanut butter filling
• Chocolate with coconut and sliced almonds
• Chocolate and peanuts
• Chocolate and Nutella
• Chocolate filled with caramel and topped with sea salt
• Chocolate and toffee mixed
• Chocolate dipped Oreo topped with crushed candy
• White chocolate then milk chocolate dipped marshmallow with sprinkles

You get the idea! Just mix and match and go crazy and let your kids design whatever they want! It’s really fun (and yummy!)

I’m so excited to introduce you to this quick paced game of Nertz. It’s a fun and simple game to play and to learn making it perfect for any occasion. All you need is a deck of cards per player and you are all set!

Let’s learn to play Nertz…I promise you’ll love it!

Before I tell you all of the deets on Nertz, I have some more fun games I think you will love:

Nertz Card Game:

If you’ve played Solitaire this will be a lot like that. It’s really just a variation of Solitaire, but played in groups and is fast paced.

What you Need:

• A Standard Deck of Cards Per Player-(affiliate) Bicycle Standard (2 Deck Pack)

Object of the Game:

• The object of the game is to get rid of the Nertz pile of cards. Once that pile is gone, that player wins.

Game Set Up:

• Number of players can range from 2 players and up.
• Each player use their own deck of cards (no jokers).
• Shuffle cards. Count out 13 cards and place them in a pile with the top card turned up…this is your Nertz pile.
• Place 4 single cards face up next to the Nertz pile creating your “work piles”
• Leave an open area in the middle of the players for the common area (which I’ll explain later).
• The remaining cards each player has will be their “stock pile” to be used during the game.
• It should look something like the image below.

How to Play Nertz:

• Each player will play on their own “work piles” using their Nertz pile and their “stock pile” cards. The only cards that will be played as a group is in the middle area where the aces will go.
• When the game is started every player begins to play their cards. There are a couple ways to play through a player’s cards. Cards can be played in the “common area” starting with an Ace and played same suit in numerical order up to a King. Each player can play on their own “work piles” alternating colors and counting down in numerical order. For instance, if a black Queen is showing, the player can play a red Jack followed by a black 10 and so on down the line.
• Players will be working through their “stock pile” cards turning every 3rd card up. If the 3rd card can be played in the “common area” or on the player’s “work piles” the player can play that card. Remember, the idea is to get rid of the Nertz pile so always take the opportunity to play that card first.
• Once a card is played from the Nertz pile, the player will flip over the next card on the pile.
• Players can always have 4 “work piles” so when there’s an empty slot the top card from the Nertz pile can be moved in that slot. Kings from the “stock pile” cards can also be placed in an empty slot, but moving the Nertz pile is priority so that is usually the best move.

How to Win Nertz:

• Being the first player to play all of the cards from the Nertz pile wins the game! The player simply shouts “Nertz” to signal the end.

Does your family like to play card games? I love playing them and are always on the lookout for fun games to play with my familys. Well, Garbage is it.

Yes, you heard correctly…Garbage card game! It’s a super fun game that the whole family will love. And so simple everyone can play.

How to Play Garbage:

Garbage is an easy to play card game that is perfect for all ages and any size group. Players simply need to be able to put their cards in numerical order, so if the player can count they are old enough to play.

What is Needed:

• One deck of cards (52 card deck)-if you are playing with 4 or more players you may need additional decks.
• I like these cards from Amazon (affiliate) 2-Pack: Playing Cards

How to Start:

• Deal 10 cards to each player, leaving the cards turned facedown on the table.
• Each player will arrange their cards in 2 rows of 5 in front of them (leaving facedown).

Objective:

• Be the first player to arrange the cards in numerical order starting with an Ace as the starting card. Ordering them from Ace-10.

How to Play Garbage Card Game:

• The player to the left of the dealer will go first. That player may take the card that is face up (one card is left face up by the remaining stack of cards), or they may draw a card from the top of the deck.
• The first player draws their card, if it is an Ace-10, they may play that card in the corresponding spot. For example, if the player draws a 2 they will place that card in the second spot face up.
• The card that was in the second spot is then flipped over revealing the card. If the card is another card between Ace-10 it can be placed in the proper spot.
• This keeps going until the player reaches a card that cannot be placed. The player will then discard that card, and their turn is over.
• If a King is drawn or turned over at any point, it can be used as a wild card. The player may place it in any spot they wish. Once a King card is placed, it can be moved if the card fitting that spot is revealed. Jacks and Queens are always garbage cards.

• When a player has all of their cards uncovered and in numerical order, they win that round.
• Each player will have one more turn to try to finish turning all of their cards. If a player does, they also win that round. Players can turn over their cards after their final turn to see if their cards line up by chance. If they do, that player also wins the round.

• There will be 10 rounds of this Garbage card game. If a player “won” the previous round, they will receive one less card. So if they had 10 cards previously, they will be dealt 9 cards. They will then need to arrange the cards from Ace to 9.
• Each round won, means one less card the next round for the players that won. So as the game gets going, each player could get a different amount of cards.

Winning a Game of Garbage:

• The first player to get down to one card and gets an Ace uncovered, wins the game.

This sardines game is an absolute family favorite. We play it anytime we get the family together because it takes zero planning and entertains everyone for hours…literally hours! It’s perfect because it can be played anywhere and with any number of players.

I have all of the details, and I promise…you will love playing!

Sardines Game:

Look at my goofy family playing sardines. We had a fun vacation in Park City, Utah and needed to kill some time at the hotel and sardines was our solution. Side note, if you’re looking for a fun vacation, Park City is worth a look and I have some fun suggestions for you. It sounds completely strange to play at hotels, but it’s one of our favorite places. We get some weird looks, but we have tons of laughs.

Sardines is a reversed version of hide and go seek. Instead of having one player be in charge of finding all of the people, in sardines one player hides and everyone else needs to seek.

How to Play Sardines:

• Determine your playing area. If places are off limits, now is the time to set that rule. We usually keep bathrooms off limits. Now is also the time to decide if you want to play with lights on or off. When we are playing in an environment we can control, like a house, we keep the lights off.
• Choose one player to be “IT” or player one-this player will be the one who will hide from all of the other players. If you are playing with younger children feel free to play in pairs, assigning two players to hide.
• Once you have your designated player, you need to give them time to select a hiding place. Gather all of the players in one place and have them close their eyes. We usually give 2-3 minutes for our player to hide.
• Player one uses their time to select a hiding place. The hiding place needs to be large enough people can hide with that player.

• When time has been allowed for player one to hide, all of the other players separate to look for player one.
• Once a player locates player one, they quietly sneak into the hiding place and hide with player one. This continues on until every player finds player one and hides with that player. Toward the end it gets a little squishy (hence the name…sardines!).

• Once all players have found player one, the round is over and a new player one can be selected and the game is repeated.

Sardines is one of our favorite games to play as a family. We also love to player “Murder in the Dark,” these two games are seriously our favorites!

I know that murder in the dark sounds more like a nightmare than a fun party game…but trust me, it’s a blast to play. I play this murder in the dark game with my family all of the time and it’s so fun. Plus, it’s so simple to put together and requires no planning. And is perfect for large groups.

I will show you how I play, and give you some ways to tweak it depending on who you are playing with.

Fun Murder in the Dark Game:

Murder in the Dark is basically a suspenseful hide and go seek game played in the dark with a little mystery of who is “killing” off the players.

It’s played in the dark, with a designated “murderer” and it’s up to the rest of the players to discover who the guilty person is while trying to stay alive.

My family and I started to play this game when the youngest child was 10 and he loved it. I’m not sure I would recommend playing with younger kids because it’s played in the dark and could get scary. With that being said, you need to know your audience and cater the rules to them.

Supplies Needed:

• Any Type of Cards: Face Cards, Uno Cards, Old Maid…anything will work. You will need one card for each player.
• A place to place that is big enough for a group to walk around, and is free from things on the ground so your players won’t trip. This can be played outside, in a house, or any building.

How to play Murder in the Dark-

First things first, decide which card is the “murder” card. For instance, if you are playing with face cards you can choose the ace of spades to be the “murder” card (or the reverse card with Uno, or the Old Maid…you get the idea). This card will determine who will be the murderer in each round of the Murder in the Dark Game.

• Establish a gathering point (if you are playing in a home you may choose the family room to be your gathering place) this will be the place everyone will come to when the round is finished.
• When the players are gathered, place the cards face down on a table (laying out one card per player). Each player will select a card and look at it, but doesn’t show anyone else. Only the murder card matters, the rest of the cards means you will playing as a “civilian.” Once the players have looked at their cards, gather them back up and set them aside. Make sure to let the group know what card is the murder card before they choose their cards. We want to make sure the murderer knows who they are!
• While all your players are gathered, explain the rules including the playing area. For example, you may want the bathrooms to be “off limits” or any other rooms you don’t want players in. You will also want to decide how the murderer will do their murders. Some examples could include a tap on the head or shoulder or a pretend slit of the throat (again, cater to your crowd and decide what will work best).
• Once the rules have been explained and the cards chosen you are ready to start the round.

Playing Murder in the Dark Party Game:

• Turn lights off (we keep a couple lights on in places like stairs, or just a few night lights around so the players can see a little bit). Everyone can go their own way. If you are playing with nervous players or younger players they may want to go in pairs. But beware, Danetta once hid with her “nervous” 10 year old son who was actually the murderer. Needless to say, she was out of the game quickly!
• Civilian Rules: There are several strategies you can use here. Some people may want to find a great hiding place and wait for the round to be done, staying out of sight the entire time. While others may want to walk around, trying to see what is happening so they can figure out who the “murderer” is. Some people like to stay seen, thinking they can escape being murdered because there are too many witnesses. There is no talking allowed during the round.
• If a civilian comes upon another player who is not moving they ask that player if they are “dead.” That player can answer with a simple yes or no. If the answer is no, the other player moves on not revealing their hiding spot, if the answer is yes, the player who is alive yells “Murder in the Dark.” At that time, all players return to the gathering point (including any players who were “murdered” during the round).
• Murderer Rules: The murderer gives no indication they are the murderer. They will leave when all of the other players leave. The objective for the murderer is to get as many people as possible per round. The murderer wins if they can get all players before they are discovered. There are several strategies for the murderer. They can hide in once place, murdering players as they come by. Or they may want to walk around to discover where the other players are. The main objective is to remain undiscovered as the murderer. The actual murder happens when the murderer gets a player alone and then uses the signal previously decided. At that point, the murderer can tell that player to move within a 3 foot area (the murderer may want to hide the player so they won’t be easily discovered). The murderer then moves on to more players.

How to Win This Fun Party Game:

• Once all of the players have gathered, the murdered players will gather so you know how many people were murdered. They can’t say ANYTHING! The remaining players (including the murderer) then discuss who is the guilty party. The players discuss anything they want for 2 minutes. They may want to ask where the body was found at which point another player may know who was around that specific room. The players will use that 2 minutes to decide who is guilty. After the time is up, a vote is taken. When the majority votes on a specific player, that player then admits if they are the murderer. If they are, the game is over and another game can begin by selecting new cards. If the accused is not the murderer, they are out of the game and sit with the other murdered players during the next round (they all stay in the gathering area during the next round). The next round then begins and the process is repeated until the murderer is discovered or everyone is dead.

It’s such a fun game to play! My family plays this at family reunions, parties, really anytime they are together. Such fun!

Do you ever feel like life is passing too quickly, and your family is growing and changing too fast? Time works like that…it seems to pass before we can even blink. I’m feeling the crunch of having my older kiddo close to leaving our little nests. Time seems to be our biggest culprit right now so I’m determined to squeeze every ounce of family time I can get.

Hedbanz is a go-to game our families love to play. It’s as simple as putting on a headband and putting a character in it. Each person will need to guess who they are by asking the other players questions about their character. This is a good game for all ages!

Spot It:

Spot It is a quick paced game, so you will be able to play several rounds of this game. Each card has a match on it and the trick is finding it among all of the images. Spot It has many versions, some are designed for younger kiddos. Either way, it’s great for all ages.

Apples to Apples:

If you want a game that will provide lots of laughs, this is it! Apples to Apples is a perfect game for any crowd. This one is a junior version, perfect for family game night!
