So, it happened! My oldest son just turned the big 2-1. And although I think I’m still in a bit of shock I knew we needed to do something special to celebrate this birthday.

Because a 21st birthday is usually associated with drinking, I thought it would be fun to put together a family friendly version and created a mixed drink stations for mocktails. Seriously, so fun!

21st Party Ideas:

We invited all of our extended family over to celebrate with my son. It was so fun to mix drinks and visit. And the best part for me was how simple it was to add something special to my son’s birthday party.

Let’s start with the cups. It’s super simple to add a sugar rim and makes the cups look amazing. All you need is some granulated sugar, food coloring, and Karo Syrup.

How to make a sugar rim:

• Put 1/2-1 cup of sugar in a plastic bag (depending on how many cups you will be doing)
• Add a couple of drops of food coloring to the bag and mix until blended
• Place the colored sugar in a bowl
• Pour 1/2 cup of Karo Syrup in a separate bowl
• Dip the rim of your glass into Karo Syrup
• And then dip the glass in the sugar.

Make sure to not get too much Karo Syrup or it will begin to run down the glass. Let the syrup dry and the sugar will solidify.

Fun Mocktail Ideas:

Now, let’s talk about filling the glasses. The best part about this 21st party idea is that you can really mix any drinks you want. We had such a fun time experimenting with mixing different drinks together. I’ll tell you some of our favorites, but have fun trying your own.

Ingredients Used:

• Pineapple Juice
• Orange Juice
• Sprite
• Mountain Dew
• Pineapple Fanta
• Grenadine (this is what makes the drinks look layered and amazing)
• Strawberry Daiquiri Mix
• Pina Colada Mix
• Any Fruit You Like, Any Sodas You Like

We mixed lots of different concoctions but we made a simple menu of our favorite drinks so our guests had something to choose from. Here were our favorites, with fun names of course…

21 on the Rocks– Strawberry Daiquiri and Pina Colada

Officially Legal-Mountain Dew, Fanta, and Grenadine, the Grenadine will sink to the bottom of the drink and create a cool layered effect.

Underage-Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice and Grenadine

Birthday Bash-Pineapple Juice and Mountain Dew

Bottoms Up-Sprite and Orange Juice

We tried to stick with flavors that would all mix together and taste yummy. Get creative.

And because no night of drinking would be complete without food, we added a butter board to munch on while we drank. And it might have given me a good excuse to give this new trend a try. Let me tell you, it was so tasty.

To say my kiddos love popcorn would be huge understatement! They LOVE popcorn. It’s really our go-to treat so naturally this popcorn bar was a huge hit. And the best part? It’s so simple to put together and looks amazing, making it perfect for any type of gathering. From a family movie night to a big party…this popcorn bar aims to please.

Popcorn Bar-

How cute is this DIY popcorn bar? And seriously guys, it’s soooo tasty. I wanted to spice up a family movie night so I decided to put together this fun popcorn bar and it was a huge hit. Everyone absolutely loved it and kept going back for different combos.

Here’s a shopping list to get things started. Buy whatever you think sounds good with popcorn, but here are some possibilities. Remember to plan for sweet and savory so you have something for everyone.

As far as putting this together, I used glass jars to display all of the options. I love using canning jars because I always have them on hand and they are adorable. These chalkboard tags worked great on the jars letting everyone know what their options were.

I had these cute popcorn bowls for my guests to build their perfect bowl of popcorn. But if you don’t have bowls, paper sacks work great. Simply fold down the edges and they will work perfectly.

So, what do you do when your oldest kiddo is turning 18? You throw a huge glow in the dark party. And let me just say…it was HUGE! Seriously guys, I let the birthday boy be in charge of the invitations and we stopped counting at 100 guests! I didn’t even know he knew that many people. You know how they say it’s not a party until the cops are called? Well, let’s just say…it was a party (he,he)!!

But really, the glow in the dark was a hit and so simple to put together. I have all the details so you can throw a really fun party of your own.

Glow in the Dark Party:

How fun does this look? I had a DIY glow stick chandelier, glow in the dark balloon arch, and lots more fun lighting to make our party pop.

I started our party planning with a trip to Amazon. Yep, almost everything I needed for this party came to our door courtesy of Amazon. It was so simple and super cost effective.

That’s everything I used for this party…other than the food.

So, can we talk about how cute this glow stick chandelier is? And seriously, it’s super simple to make. Here are all the deets.

Glow in the Dark Party Decorations:

This little cutie is super simple. And everything you need was listed above in the shopping items. But you will need a grinder, hack saw, sawzall, or anything to cut through the metal on a tomato cage.

Step #1:

Start with a tomato cage.

Step #2

Using your grinder (or whatever you are using to cut the metal), simply cut below the second tier. You want to end with two rings. You can decide what size you want. If you want your chandelier to be larger you’ll use the top two rings. If you want it to be smaller, use the bottom two.

You’ll end up with something similar to this. 

Step #3

Spray paint using black spray paint.

Step #4

Last step…simply add the glow sticks. You may want to wait until you are closer to your party time to do this last step so you can break the glow sticks and hang them. They will stay shining for lots of hours so you can do this well before your party.

The glow sticks we ordered from Amazon fit perfectly on the ring of the tomato cages.

I wanted this chandelier to shine bright for everyone to see so I placed it in the center of the room. I lined my ceiling with colorful table clothes fanning out from the center of the room. And in the center I hung the chandelier with fishing line. The fishing line worked perfectly so it wouldn’t be seen and held the weight perfectly.

I added a fun glow in the dark balloon arch over the food table. It was so fun.

Glow in the Dark Balloon Arch:

Putting a balloon arch together could not be simpler. I made this one the “old fashioned” way with tying all of the balloons on a string and scrunching them together. But I’ve also used a balloon arch kit and they make it even simpler.

For this arch I used a combination of balloons. Some glow in the dark, some LED balloons, and some regular balloons. To get a super cute balloon arch it’s best to use all shapes and sizes. The polka dotted balloons I found on Amazon were hands down my favorites. They added such a fun pattern to the arch and they glowed really well.

I hung this bad boy above my food table using more fishing line. It really made the food table come alive.

As far as the rest of the decorations, I kept it simple. I hung black table cloths on the walls so it would be darker for the glow sticks to really pop. We replaced the light bulbs in the area with blacklight bulbs, and hung some of the disco lights in the corners of the room.

I made sure to have plenty of glow sticks on hand so each guest could take as many as they wanted. The extra glow sticks were a perfect addition to the food table to add some more fun color.

I also snagged this fun sign from Amazon and hung it on an empty wall. It was the perfect place to take some selfies.

Such a fun neon party and the teens LOVED it. And I loved planning a party for my “to cool for school” 18 year old!

This sardines game is an absolute family favorite. We play it anytime we get the family together because it takes zero planning and entertains everyone for hours…literally hours! It’s perfect because it can be played anywhere and with any number of players.

I have all of the details, and I promise…you will love playing!

Sardines Game:

Look at my goofy family playing sardines. We had a fun vacation in Park City, Utah and needed to kill some time at the hotel and sardines was our solution. Side note, if you’re looking for a fun vacation, Park City is worth a look and I have some fun suggestions for you. It sounds completely strange to play at hotels, but it’s one of our favorite places. We get some weird looks, but we have tons of laughs.

Sardines is a reversed version of hide and go seek. Instead of having one player be in charge of finding all of the people, in sardines one player hides and everyone else needs to seek.

How to Play Sardines:

• Determine your playing area. If places are off limits, now is the time to set that rule. We usually keep bathrooms off limits. Now is also the time to decide if you want to play with lights on or off. When we are playing in an environment we can control, like a house, we keep the lights off.
• Choose one player to be “IT” or player one-this player will be the one who will hide from all of the other players. If you are playing with younger children feel free to play in pairs, assigning two players to hide.
• Once you have your designated player, you need to give them time to select a hiding place. Gather all of the players in one place and have them close their eyes. We usually give 2-3 minutes for our player to hide.
• Player one uses their time to select a hiding place. The hiding place needs to be large enough people can hide with that player.

• When time has been allowed for player one to hide, all of the other players separate to look for player one.
• Once a player locates player one, they quietly sneak into the hiding place and hide with player one. This continues on until every player finds player one and hides with that player. Toward the end it gets a little squishy (hence the name…sardines!).

• Once all players have found player one, the round is over and a new player one can be selected and the game is repeated.

Sardines is one of our favorite games to play as a family. We also love to player “Murder in the Dark,” these two games are seriously our favorites!

I know that murder in the dark sounds more like a nightmare than a fun party game…but trust me, it’s a blast to play. I play this murder in the dark game with my family all of the time and it’s so fun. Plus, it’s so simple to put together and requires no planning. And is perfect for large groups.

I will show you how I play, and give you some ways to tweak it depending on who you are playing with.

Fun Murder in the Dark Game:

Murder in the Dark is basically a suspenseful hide and go seek game played in the dark with a little mystery of who is “killing” off the players.

It’s played in the dark, with a designated “murderer” and it’s up to the rest of the players to discover who the guilty person is while trying to stay alive.

My family and I started to play this game when the youngest child was 10 and he loved it. I’m not sure I would recommend playing with younger kids because it’s played in the dark and could get scary. With that being said, you need to know your audience and cater the rules to them.

Supplies Needed:

• Any Type of Cards: Face Cards, Uno Cards, Old Maid…anything will work. You will need one card for each player.
• A place to place that is big enough for a group to walk around, and is free from things on the ground so your players won’t trip. This can be played outside, in a house, or any building.

How to play Murder in the Dark-

First things first, decide which card is the “murder” card. For instance, if you are playing with face cards you can choose the ace of spades to be the “murder” card (or the reverse card with Uno, or the Old Maid…you get the idea). This card will determine who will be the murderer in each round of the Murder in the Dark Game.

• Establish a gathering point (if you are playing in a home you may choose the family room to be your gathering place) this will be the place everyone will come to when the round is finished.
• When the players are gathered, place the cards face down on a table (laying out one card per player). Each player will select a card and look at it, but doesn’t show anyone else. Only the murder card matters, the rest of the cards means you will playing as a “civilian.” Once the players have looked at their cards, gather them back up and set them aside. Make sure to let the group know what card is the murder card before they choose their cards. We want to make sure the murderer knows who they are!
• While all your players are gathered, explain the rules including the playing area. For example, you may want the bathrooms to be “off limits” or any other rooms you don’t want players in. You will also want to decide how the murderer will do their murders. Some examples could include a tap on the head or shoulder or a pretend slit of the throat (again, cater to your crowd and decide what will work best).
• Once the rules have been explained and the cards chosen you are ready to start the round.

Playing Murder in the Dark Party Game:

• Turn lights off (we keep a couple lights on in places like stairs, or just a few night lights around so the players can see a little bit). Everyone can go their own way. If you are playing with nervous players or younger players they may want to go in pairs. But beware, Danetta once hid with her “nervous” 10 year old son who was actually the murderer. Needless to say, she was out of the game quickly!
• Civilian Rules: There are several strategies you can use here. Some people may want to find a great hiding place and wait for the round to be done, staying out of sight the entire time. While others may want to walk around, trying to see what is happening so they can figure out who the “murderer” is. Some people like to stay seen, thinking they can escape being murdered because there are too many witnesses. There is no talking allowed during the round.
• If a civilian comes upon another player who is not moving they ask that player if they are “dead.” That player can answer with a simple yes or no. If the answer is no, the other player moves on not revealing their hiding spot, if the answer is yes, the player who is alive yells “Murder in the Dark.” At that time, all players return to the gathering point (including any players who were “murdered” during the round).
• Murderer Rules: The murderer gives no indication they are the murderer. They will leave when all of the other players leave. The objective for the murderer is to get as many people as possible per round. The murderer wins if they can get all players before they are discovered. There are several strategies for the murderer. They can hide in once place, murdering players as they come by. Or they may want to walk around to discover where the other players are. The main objective is to remain undiscovered as the murderer. The actual murder happens when the murderer gets a player alone and then uses the signal previously decided. At that point, the murderer can tell that player to move within a 3 foot area (the murderer may want to hide the player so they won’t be easily discovered). The murderer then moves on to more players.

How to Win This Fun Party Game:

• Once all of the players have gathered, the murdered players will gather so you know how many people were murdered. They can’t say ANYTHING! The remaining players (including the murderer) then discuss who is the guilty party. The players discuss anything they want for 2 minutes. They may want to ask where the body was found at which point another player may know who was around that specific room. The players will use that 2 minutes to decide who is guilty. After the time is up, a vote is taken. When the majority votes on a specific player, that player then admits if they are the murderer. If they are, the game is over and another game can begin by selecting new cards. If the accused is not the murderer, they are out of the game and sit with the other murdered players during the next round (they all stay in the gathering area during the next round). The next round then begins and the process is repeated until the murderer is discovered or everyone is dead.

It’s such a fun game to play! My family plays this at family reunions, parties, really anytime they are together. Such fun!

If you’ve ever thrown a party for a bunch of teenagers, you know how hard it can be to keep them engaged in what’s happening. That’s exactly why fun party games is a must, and I have an awesome one for you! This M&M party game is a perfect way to keep those teens entertained. I’ve played it so many times, and every time it’s a total blast!

M&M Party Game for Teens:

This is such a simple game to put together, and even very simple to play…so let’s get started. Here’s what you need to play…

Supplies Needed:

• Large Bag of M&M’s (any kind you love)
• Scoop or Spoon
• Bowl to Put the M&M’s In
• Extra clothes to put on during the game (hats, gloves, scarf, coat, ear muffs…anything that would be funny for someone to put on)
• 2 Dice

Once you have all of your supplies lined up, you are all set to play.

How to Play the M&M Game:

Objective: Get the most M&M’s scooped from the bowl.

• Put the M&M’s in a bowl and place in the center of the table, along with the extra clothes you will be using.
• Gather all of the players and stand around a table.
• Have one player start rolling 2 dice. Each player will roll the dice once and pass the dice along, giving each player a chance to roll.
• If a player rolls doubles (two of the same number) they get a chance to scoop as many M&M’s as they can. Sounds simple, right?! But before a player can start to scoop M&M’s, they need to first get all dressed up. Each player that rolls a double will quickly put on all of the items of extra clothing you have provided before they get to scoop. Keep in mind while one player is trying to get dressed and scoop M&M’s, the dice are still making their way around the table. Once another player rolls doubles, the clothing goes to that player and they get to try to get the M&M’s.
• Once a player is dressed, they may start to scoop M&M’s one at a time. The player cannot scoop more than one at a time. Each player will make a pile of their M&M’s in front of them.
• If someone else rolls doubles, the player holding the scoop must quickly pass all objects to the next player.
• Keep playing until all of the M&M’s have been scooped. (You may also set a time on this game if you prefer). The game is won by being the player with the most M&M’s in their pile at the end.
• You are ready to play!! Have FUN!

This game is so simple, which is why it’s such a blast. I promise there will be lots of laughs, and even some rowdiness. It’s a fast paced game, the teens get really invested in what’s happening.

• Chafing Dish Fuel Cans: If you want to provide a place to roast the marshmallows, these can be a fun option. If you have a fire pit or BBQ, you can skip the chafing cans.

Now that you have all of the supplies, it’s time to put this s’mores charcuterie board together.

How To Make this Charcuterie Board:

• Unwrap the HONEY MAID Graham Crackers, HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Bars, and JET PUFFED Marshmallows
• Break the HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Bars into squares
• Place the HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate Bars and HONEY MAID Graham Crackers around your board, keeping them together in small clusters.
• Fill in the rest of the board with the JET PUFFED Marshmallows.
• Add chafing dish fuel cans and skewers if you are using them.

Have you ever played this fun and simple unwrap the candy bar party game? It’s exactly what it sounds like…unwrapping a candy bar. But it wouldn’t be a funny party game if I didn’t add some extra twists to make the unwrapping a little trickier.

So let’s see just how fast your party guests can get this candy bar unwrapped and in their mouths!

Hilarious Party Game:

So, basically the objective of this game is to get a candy bar totally unwrapped and ready to eat. The tricky part is that others will be trying to get a turn to do the same.

This game really is perfect for all ages! Simple enough for kiddos but funny enough for adults and everyone in between. You will seriously get some good laughs while playing this funny party game.

Supplies:

• King Size Candy Bar- I used flat candy bars so they were easier to wrap.
• Dice
• Wrapping Paper
• Oven Mitts- And any other clothing items you want your party guests to use when it’s their turn to unwrap the candy bar.
• Knives- Plastic or butter knives…nothing sharp!

Before the party, wrap your candy bar several times in wrapping paper. The more times you wrap it, the more time it will take to unwrap it, so you can determine the length of the game. Keep in mind who’s playing…younger kiddos will need less wrapping.

How to Play the Unwrap the Candy Bar Game:

• Gather all players around a table (we usually stand).
• Have one player start rolling 2 dice. Each player will roll the dice once and pass the dice along, giving each player a chance to roll.
• If a player rolls doubles (two of the same number) they get a chance to unwrap the candy bar. They need to first put on two oven mitts (one on each hand) and any other item of extra clothing. We’ve played with scarves, hats, ear muffs, rain boots…the idea is that the player will be trying to hurry to get started unwrapping the candy bar and the clothing will slow them down a bit. Keep in mind while one player is trying to get dressed and unwrap the candy bar the dice are still making their way around the table. Once another player rolls doubles, the clothing goes to that player and they get to try to get the candy bar unwrapped.
• Once a player is dressed, they may try to unwrap the candy bar with two knives. Player may not use anything other than knives to touch the candy bar.
• If someone else rolls doubles, the player holding the knives and has the candy bar must quickly pass all objects to the next player.
• The game is won by being the player who unwraps the last of the packaging completely from the candy bar.
• When deciding how hard to make this game, just let ages of the players determine your choices. If you are playing this as a family game with multiple ages, you can have the rules different for each age group playing. Maybe the younger kids only need mittens on their hands, while teens and adults have more clothing to put on!
• You are ready to play!! Have FUN!

The Breakfast Scramble Minute to Win it Game:

Supplies Needed:

• Cereal Boxes: For this game you will need several cereal boxes, cut into puzzle pieces. Simply cut the front of a cereal box into 16 equal pieces. Once you one box cut, put it into a plastic bag to keep the pieces together.

Instructions:

• Give each player or team one bag of the puzzle pieces.
• When you say go, they must assemble the puzzle as quickly as possible. You can have them racing the clock, giving them one minute to finish, or you can have them race each other.

Paper Dragon Minute to Win it Game:

Supplies Needed:

• 2 Rolls of Party Streamers

Instructions:

• Player must unroll 2 rolls of party streamers using only their hands and arms.
• Set the streamer rolls at the player’s feet with the player holding one end of one streamer roll in each hand.
• When the clock starts, the player may begin unspooling the streamers. Player may not kick, throw, or grab the spool directly.
• If the spool breaks, the player may pick up the end and continue
• To complete this game, both rolls of streamers much be unrolled and off the ground within 60 seconds.

Minute to Win it Games:

Moving on Up Minute to Win it Game:

Supplies Needed:

• 40 Plastic Cups-one either a different color, or simply write on one cup the word “done.”

Instructions:

• Player must hold a stack of cups with the one that’s marked “done” at the bottom. Player must move 1 cup at a time from the top to the bottom of the stack, trying to cycle the “done” cup back to the bottom of the stack.
• Set up the stack of 40 cups with the “done” one of the bottom.
• When the clock starts, the player may grab a single cup from the top of the stack and place it on the bottom of the stack.
• Player must use 1 hand to grab each cup, and must alternate hands with each cup.
• If more than 1 cup is removed at a time, player must place all cups that are outside the stack back at the top of the stack before continuing.
• Player must play the game from a standing position.
• To complete the game, the “done” cup must be placed on the bottom of the stack after traveling through the stack of cups. This must be completed within 60 seconds.
• To score, you can decide if you want to give one point per cup that is moved. Or just points for a win.

Penny Hose Minute to Win it Game:

Supplies Needed:

• 1 Pair of Pantyhose
• 2 Pennies
• Table

Instructions:

• Player must remove one penny from each leg of a pair of pantyhose using only their hands.
• Start by placing one penny in the bottom of each leg of the pantyhose. Player begins with his or her wrists inside each leg of the pantyhose at the top of the leg part.
• When the clock starts, player may use only their hands and arms to attempt to grab the pennies.
• Pantyhose cannot touch anything else.
• If the penny touches the floor the game is over.
• To complete this game, player must get both pennies out of the pantyhose with his or her hands and place them on the table within the 60 second time limit.

Junk in the Trunk Minute to Win it Game:

Supplies Needed:

• 8 Ping-pong Balls
• 1 Empty Tissue Box
• 1 Belt

Instructions:

• Wiggle a box that is attached to your waist filled with ping-pong balls until the box is empty.
• Fill the tissue box with ping-pong balls, then attach tissue box to the back of belt. Put on the belt with a tissue box sitting at the small of your back.
• When the clock starts, player may begin moving body to shake the ping-pong balls out.
• Player’s hands or arm may not touch the box or belt.
• Player may only touch the floor with his or her feet.
• To complete the game, player must get all 8 ping-pong balls out of the box within 60 seconds.

Teens Party Games:

Mega Bubble:

Supplies Needed:

• 1 Hula Hoop
• 1 Bottle of Bubbles
• Start Line

Instructions:

• Player must blow a bubble through a hoop 15′ away.
• When the clock starts, player may grab a bubble wand and begin blowing bubbles from behind start line, 15′ from hoop.
• Player may only use breath to propel bubble.
• Player may not touch the end hoop.
• To complete the game, an un-popped bubble must be created behind the foul line, then blown through the end hoop within 60 seconds.

A Bit Dicey Minute to Win It Game:

Supplies Needed:

• Popsicle Stick
• 6 Dice (you can also use Starbursts for this game)

Instructions:

• Balance six dice (or Starbursts) on a popsicle stick held in your mouth.
• Prior to the game, player places a single popsicle stick in his/her mouth.
• When the clock starts, player will pick up and vertically stack one die at a time on the stick.
• Player may not allow dice to rest against their nose or to touch any part of their face.
• In the event that a die is dropped or falls off of the stick, player may take a replacement die off of the podium and use it in its place.
• To complete the game, 6 dice (or Starbursts) must be stacked one on top of the other on the popsicle stick within 60 seconds.

Bobble Head Minute to Win It Game:

Supplies Needed:

• 1 Pedometer Attached to a Headband

Instructions:

• With a pedometer attached to the forehead, move the head around to record 125 total “steps” in one minute.
• After the headband/pedometer is on the head, the device is set to zero in steps mode.
• When the clock starts, player may begin moving head without touching the pedometer to register “steps”.
• If the pedometer moves, the player may stop motion to prevent it from falling off, re-adjust the headband, then continue.
• To complete the game, player must record 125 steps within 60 seconds.

Defying Gravity:

Supplies Needed:

• 3 Balloons (Inflated)

Instructions:

• Tap 3 balloons to keep them off the ground for a minute.
• When the clock starts, player releases all 3 balloons into the air.
• Player may not hold balloons, allow them to rest on the body, or hit the ground…if they do the game is over.
• To complete the game, player must keep all balloons off the ground for 60 seconds.

Have you ever played minute to win it games? These party games seem to be everywhere because they are so simple to put together, and are a blast to play. I have played them at all kinds of parties, and every time my guests love them!

I have lots of different ideas for you today, I’m sure you will find tons of ideas you’ll love.

Before I dive into the actual game ideas, lets’ talk about the basics.

How to play Minute to Win It Games:

• The basic idea is that each of the games you play will be timed for one minute, so these are quick moving party games. If you have players competing against each other, you can forgo the timing and let them race each other. Usually, you will play a series of games, keeping a tally of points you assign to each game.
• These games can be played individually, in pairs, or groups. It really just depends on the game being played on how is best to split it up. Again, just give each game a point value and each person in the winning group the points.
• Many of the minute to win it games we have are themed games. Meaning they are specific to a special function such as a baby shower or they are geared to a specific theme. But when you read through the games, realize you can change any of the ideas to fit your party with a few adjustments. They are super simple to adjust, rename, or slightly change.
