It was a Friday night a couple of weeks ago while I was sitting at a football game with my two football obsessed kids when inspiration struck! So much of our lives as moms are spent taming fights, wrangling kids into doing what they are supposed to-we are referees! Referees in our own family!

It seemed like the perfect Halloween costume for a mom to dress in. A little bit silly, a pretty accurate representation of mom life and something super easy to throw together! You might even have most of the supplies at home already.

Because we all know that moms are always putting someone in timeout right?!

Halloween Costume for Mom: Referee:

Hopefully, you have a lot of the things you need to make this costume already. You might need to grab a couple of things, but I wanted it to be simple so I tried to make it as easy to put together as possible.

Supplies Needed:

• Black Shirt
• Black Pants
• White Tape (I found something like this that worked great)
• Whistle
• Black Hat
• Yellow scrap of fabric

Instructions:

To make this, grab a ruler. Figure out the width of your tape and then space the strips evenly across the shirt.

On the back, the referee usually has a letter that indicates what his role is on the field. So, of course, Mom needs an M for mom:

I did the same on the hat-added little strips of the tape on the seams:

Throw on a whistle and put a yellow scrap of fabric in your pocket for the penalty flag and you’re all set! How easy was that to put together!?

And even better, my little guys are being football players for Halloween this year, so we can match!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, I love everything about it and one of my favorite things is being in the school that day to see all the little cuties dressed up for Halloween and helping with class parties!

I also know just how busy this time of year can get and how crazy it can be for moms when you are scrambling to put together costumes and make treats and have everything ready for the big day. If you’re in charge of a Halloween party in the classroom as well, it can be hard! So I’ve put together some fun and easy school Halloween party ideas so that you can have that party all planned for you!

I’ve got a couple of fun Halloween class party game ideas, a super simple kid’s Halloween craft idea, and an easy Halloween snack for school.

Easy and Fun School Halloween Party Ideas:

Guess what? I tried this out in a third-grade classroom last year and it was a huge hit!

Usually, the school Halloween parties that I run are broken into small groups where the kids rotate through activities. So I’ve broken this class party down into 2 games, a craft, and a snack that they can do in small groups.

What’s in the “Bag of Tricks” Halloween Game:

This “Bag of Tricks” Halloween game is so fun!  My sister (I told her we would give her a shout out) was where I got this idea, and I thought it was such a fun game!  Halloween calls for a little gross, and a little mystery and this Halloween kids game has both.  You probably have most everything you need in your pantry which makes it even better.

Supplies Needed:

• Paper Sacks
• Free Printables (Found in this post)

The idea of this cute Halloween game is that you put items in bags and the kiddos have to reach into the bag without looking and feel the items.  After feeling them, they try to match them with a list of “ghoulish” things!  This game is all about letting the kid’s imagination go crazy…and then watch them squirm as they get the courage up to reach their hands into the bag looking for “Frankenstein’s brain” or a “witch’s nose.”

I have given you everything you need for this kids Halloween game (well, you’ll need the bags and the stuff to go inside)…the instructions, answer key, numbers for your bags, and the sheets for the kids to put their guesses on!  Just print them off…and have fun!

Here’s another fun game to play for Halloween, a Halloween Scavenger Hunt for the kids. And this one is super easy too!

The idea here is that you will print out some Scavenger Hunt boards for the kids to use. Then I’ve got little cards with cute characters for you to cut out and hide either in the classroom or around the school or your house or wherever you are throwing the party. The kids will have to go around and find each of the Halloween characters and mark them off on their board. When they find them all, they win!

Halloween Monster Bag Kid’s Craft:

I always include a craft station at our parties, the kiddos love it and they get to be creative!  My number one rule with crafts is to keep it simple!!  This helps you keep your sanity and the kids love simple and easy crafts.  This craft is super fun and simple, decorating snack bags.  All you need is some basic craft supplies-pompoms, pipe cleaners, stickers, googly eyes, foam shapes, pattern paper, glue sticks, and of course colorful paper sacks.  Let the kids get creative and design their own personal treat bag.  They will love it!!

Aren’t these little guys cute?  This couldn’t be simpler and it will keep the kids busy using their imaginations!

Halloween Monster Munch School Snack:

Here’s a simple Halloween school snack idea for the party. It’s a mixture of all sort of things kids would like mixed up in a trail mix style mix. You really can add anything you want to this mix. I’ll share a few of our ideas, but use whatever works for you! I thought this would be a good one because you could have parents from the class send in different items and then all you need to do is mix them up in a big bowl or cauldron:

One of the best parts of parenting is doing little things to create memories or make the kids smile, especially on holidays and special days.

I love to set little traditions like having a fun Halloween breakfast that the kids can start their day off with on the morning of Halloween. This Mummy sandwich is super quick and easy to make-something you can pull together in a few minutes on the morning of Halloween to make the kids smile.

Who could resist that cute little guy? And don’t worry moms, he’s easy enough to make that you’re going to look like a super mom and the kids never need to know it was simple!

This fun Halloween breakfast idea will probably only take you about 20 minutes to make (and that includes cooking time). They could also be made ahead the night before and just reheated that morning if that’s easier.

Fun Halloween Breakfast Idea: Mummy Sandwich

Print Recipe

Ingredients

• Crescent Roll Dough (prepackaged)
• Edible Eyes
• Scrambled Eggs
• Cheese (your choice on type)
• Ham or Bacon

Instructions

Unroll your dough and place two pieces on a greased cookie sheet (so that they form a rectangle).

Using a pizza cutter, cut the edges on either side into strips-but don’t cut all the way through. Leave the center uncut.

Top with your cheese, scrambled eggs and meat.

Fold the strips in on each other.

Bake according to the instructions on your crescent roll dough.

Add the little eyes at the end. Use a tiny bit of syrup or Karo syrup to help them stick.

See? That was easy right? Now serve it up and watch the kids smile!

Calling all of the ladies out there, this party is for you!  Death by Chocolate Halloween Party, does it get any better than that?  I’m what some people would call chocolate addicts, and I have decided to embrace it wholeheartedly.  The more chocolate the better, and if I have to die there is no better way to go!

Every great party starts with an awesome invitation.  The invitation is your chance to show your guests what to expect at your party, so you want to make them great.  I have done all of the work for you on this one, so simply add your information and let the party begin.

Halloween Theme Decorations:

Black and white make a fabulous color pallet for a party, and especially a Death by Chocolate party.  It makes finding decorations super simple, and easy to coordinate.  I’m in love with the way this all came together.

The two of us had so much fun looking on Oriental Trading for fun Halloween decoration ideas. Their site is loaded with so many possibilities, I had a blast shopping.  It was easy to find some fun treasures that highlighted our party perfectly.

These amazing lanterns are from Oriental Trading and worked perfectly for my Halloween theme. Lanterns are so versatile, I left them empty but don’t be afraid to change their function.  By filling them with candy they become an interesting bowl at your party.  You could put a candle in them if you want a bit of color added to your decorations.  Cut out shapes could be added to them, giving them a spooky new look.  Always have fun and be creative with your decorations.

These frames are also from Oriental Trading and worked perfectly to add a little cuteness to our design.  If you are doing a tablescape, these could be used as for name cards which always adds a nice personal touch to any party.

I have a bit of a love affair with apothecary jars (even though I didn’t know that’s what they were called)! They work for almost any party spread and can be so functional.  This one worked perfectly for our Oreo Cookies (because what is a chocolate party without Oreos).  I found this apothecary jar at Oriental Trading, and it’s a keeper!

Of course, you will be serving chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate at this party…did I mention chocolate!?  My favorite treat in the whole world is cupcakes, and when they are chocolate…there are no words.  So naturally, I had to make a chocolate cupcake that spoke to the chocolate lover in me.  This is a chocolate cupcake, with white chocolate frosting, topped with chocolate ganache and mini chocolate chips…you’re welcome!!

Death by Chocolate Cupcake Recipe

Print Recipe

Ingredients

• 1 Devil’s Food Cake Mix
• 1 5.9 oz. box of instant chocolate pudding
• 1 C sour cream
• 1 C vegetable oil
• ½ C water
• 4 eggs
• 1Tbsp vanilla

Instructions

Mix all of the ingredients until smooth.

Spoon the cupcake batter into muffin tins lined with cupcake papers. Fill them about 2/3 full or a little less.

Bake for 18-22 minutes (until they are just barely done-I always do exactly 18) at 350 degrees.

Then top the cupcakes with this white chocolate frosting:

Ingredients

• 2 sticks LAND O LAKES® Salted Butter, softened
• 1 C white chocolate chips
• 4–5 C powdered sugar
• 1/4 C milk

Instructions

Mix all ingredients until smooth. Add more milk or more powdered sugar as needed to get the desired consistency.

Pipe onto cupcakes.

Then top with chocolate ganache. To make the ganache, pour one cup of chocolate chips into a bow. Heat 1/2 C heavy cream to almost a boil in the microwave. Pour it over your chocolate chips and let them sit for about 2 minutes. Then stir and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes, then drizzle on the cupcakes.

Sprinkle with mini chocolate chips.

What I love about serving cupcakes at a party is that they serve two purposes-the first is a delicious treat, and the second is a fun decoration.  I simply used a Halloween plate and placed it on a candle stick, creating a perfect presentation for the perfect cupcakes.

  Pour your Chex in a large bowl.

  In a smaller bowl add your white chocolate and melt in microwave stopping to stir frequently.

  Pour over cereal and mix till evenly coated.

  Pour Peppermint Extract over the mixture.

  Add powdered sugar and mix till covered again.

  Chop Andes Mints into small pieces and add to mix. Add Sixlets and eyeballs and enjoy!

• 9 C Rice Chex
• 1 C Chocolate Chips
• 1/2 C Caramel Sauce
• 2 1/2–3 C Powdered Sugar
• Candy Corn and Candy Pumpkins
• Fall Colored Sixlets

Instructions

Pour Rice Chex in a large bowl.

In a smaller bowl add your chocolate chips and melt in microwave (stirring occasionally to prevent burning).

Pour over your Rice Chex and stir until totally coated. Add your caramel sauce and stir again until it is also coating the cereal. Add powdered sugar and stir (or put a lid on the bowl and shake) until all the cereal is evenly covered.

Add candy corn, pumpkins, and Sixlets.

Mmmmm! This stuff comes out so chewy and nice and is especially good after it has some time to sit.

Ingredients

• 2 C white chocolate chips
• 9 C Rice Chex
• 1 teaspoon coconut extract (optional-add more to taste)
• 1 1/2 powdered sugar
• Mini Marshmallows
• Shredded Coconut
• Sixlets (optional) (Get these at a party store)

Instructions

Melt your white chocolate. This part is tricky because white chocolate can be finicky. Make sure to stir often whether you are doing it in the microwave or on the stove. Heat and mix till melted.

Put your Chex in a big bowl and then pour your white chocolate mixture over it and stir till it’s covering the Chex evenly.

Add in your coconut extract, pouring it over the mixture.

Sprinkle on your powdered sugar and mix till it covers the Chex.

Sprinkle on mini marshmallows and shredded coconut to taste.

Add Sixlets for a pop of color.

How to Throw a Fun Mad Scientist Party:

This party is perfect for a birthday party, Halloween party, or for any aspiring scientist.  I have everything you need to make your party a success.  As every good scientist knows, to make the perfect formula there are steps that need to be followed.  Let’s break this down step by step.

Mad Scientist Decoration Ideas:

The color scheme for this party is orange, green, and purple.  I wanted it to have a bright, fun flare and also loved that this could work for a Halloween party as well.

I have these fun periodic table letters for you to print off and use as a background.  The letters come straight from the periodic table and spell out Science. (I had to get a little creative with Europium to make it work in the word science.)

I also thought it could be fun to use some quirky textbooks as a decoration, so we created some goofy book titles, then wrapped some books in paper (matching our party colors) and glued the textbook titles to them.

I also used some of our game pieces as decorations for the party. We have a fun game using flasks, but they worked great as party decor until we were ready to play the game:

Science Bingo:

Kids always love a good round of Bingo (and as moms I love it too because it’s so easy to pull together). I’ve put together some simple printable Bingo boards covered in all things science. There are 8 Bingo boards, so if you are playing this with a larger group (like a class) you’ll need to break them into smaller groups to play.

Then, all you need to do is print the boards. The last page has little playing cards that you can cut out and draw from to call out for the kids. Then the kids mark each science picture on their board as you call it out. The first one to get five in a row wins.

Guess the Potion:

This is such a fun party game.  Your guests need to be a little bit brave for this game, but I promise not to make them squirm too much! 

Basically, this game involves taste testing “potions” and trying to guess what they are.  You will need 5-10 different types of drinks.  Keep your drink selection simple if you are playing with a younger crowd, but if you have an older group go ahead and make it a little harder. 

I used flasks to pour our “potions” into because they are so cute and keeps things anonymous.  If you don’t have flasks, you can take off the labels or use pitchers. (I got my flasks at Michael’s-here’s some from Amazon.)

Give each player a small cup, and start by pouring one of the drinks in each cup.  Each player will then taste it and mark on the game card what their guess is making sure to number each drink.  Repeat this process until you have tasted each one.

Reveal the names of the drinks and let each player correct their game card.  A fun addition to this game is adding fun drink names to each drink.  For example, you could have Sprite as the drink and name it “phosphorous solution.”

Mad Scientist Party Activities:

Making slime seemed like an obvious choice for a science-themed party. Because this is a mad scientist party, it can be fun to add something creative like Slime Ballz or glitter or make it glow in the dark for an extra “mad” scientist twist.

I just used an easy recipe for the slime that I found online, but you can use any recipe that you love. Let the kids make this with you as a fun activity to do during the party, then they can take it home with them at the end. And storing it in a beaker just adds to the fun.

Food is the center of every party…right? I’ve got a few simple and fun food ideas for you.

Build Your Own Pizza:

If you’re throwing this party in your home with a smaller group of kids, it could be fun to let them get crazy and create their own concoctions-just like a mad scientist does with his solutions (or his monster). Give each child a pair of safety goggles and even a lab coat and let them go to work concocting. Give each child a pizza crust and have the toppings ready and let them create their pizza.

Want an easier way to do this? Try it with a cookie or a cupcake. Give them the base and let them frost and decorate how they want.

I also have some cupcake toppers that you can use if you want to make cupcakes ahead and serve them at your party. Simply cut out the toppers, tape them to a lollipop stick and stick them down into the frosting.

I added some fun sprinkles to make them look quirkier.

No party is complete without a fun party favor for your guests. I fell in love with these test tubes and knew I needed to incorporate them into my party. It was such an easy fit to use them as my party favors and they could not be simpler. I have this cute science tag for you all ready to print, all you need to do it fill the test tubes with candy and add the tag.

Halloween is such a fun time to throw a party, the costumes, the decorations, the creepiness…it’s absolute perfection.  But when I’m talking about throwing a Halloween party, the food is best part of all.  It’s the only time of year that the more disgusting and creepy the food, the more impressed your guests will be.  So many fun and easy party food options, sometimes it’s hard to know what to serve.  Don’t you worry one bit about it, I have your back!

Whether you are serving your guests a full meal or plan to serve something more simple, I have plenty of fun Halloween party foods to get your wheels turning.

When you sit down with your favorite notebook and pen to start your party planning, food is often the first thing your mind will land on.  I say go with it, make the food your first step in planning the best Halloween party.

Getting Started:

Let’s start by deciding if you want appetizers, a full meal, or desserts.  Ask yourself some questions when determining the answer-

• What time is your party?  If your party is being held at a meal time you may want to serve a meal or change the time of your party.  You don’t want to make things awkward for your guest who are showing up at your house at 5pm for a party that will put them right through the dinner hour.
• What is your budget?  Appetizers and/or desserts will be much more cost effective than serving a meal.  How much do you want to spend on this party?
• How many people will be attending?  You may be less inclined to feed a meal to a party of 50, but a party of 10 is definitely more doable.
• How much time do you have to dedicate to this party?  This question is essential when planning a party.  If you have limited time, I would not suggest you tackle a 7 course meal for your guests.  All that will do (besides filling your guest’s tummies) is cause frustration in your life.  Parties are supposed to be fun, even for the host and hostess.

Based on your answers to these questions, you should be narrowing down what direction you want to go with your party foods.  I have gathered together several ideas starting with appetizers, moving on to main course ideas, and of course ending with desserts.  So sit back, and let your imaginations take hold as you look for food options for your Halloween party.

Everyone knows that Halloween is a witch’s busy season, and I don’t want any of those good witches to start to look frazzled.  It takes work to keep that green face glowing and the frizzy hair under control.  So, let’s bust out those cauldrons and start to fill them with all things needed to keep the witches in our lives flying high on their broomsticks.

If you need a cute gift idea for a friend this time of year, it of course needs to have a fun Halloween flare.  This could not be simpler to put together and you will get extra cool points for creativity.
