What’s the Project? If you’ve got a kid who loves billiards, this pool table cake idea is a fun way to celebrate their birthday and it’s easy for you to make! The main cake is a pool ball with the age of their birthday and the rest are cupcakes for all the other pool balls. It’s simple enough to make-anyone can do it!
I mentioned earlier this week that one of my kiddos just had a birthday and we had a big party at our house for him with lots of little boys and a lot of wild and crazy fun. He wanted the party to be sort of a game theme and just let everyone hang out and play air hockey and X-Box and pool and eat and have fun.
For Christmas, he got a miniature pool table and it’s been a huge hit and was a big part of the motivation to have this party. So for his cake, I decided it would be fun to do a pool table cake theme and make cake pool balls. We had so many kids coming that I knew we might need more than one cake, so it made sense to make a big pool ball cake with cupcakes for each of the other pool balls.
You can see, the main cake is an 11 ball, the age he’s turning, and then all of the cupcakes are the other pools balls-all the numbered balls and the cue ball.
It wasn’t hard to make-I don’t have a ton of cake making skills. The trickiest part was just making all of those different colors of frosting.
But anyone can make this pool table cake and you could make the main cake for any age (up to 15 since there are 15 pool balls). Or get creative and make a higher number pool ball for an adult if you want.
So if you’ve got a pool themed party or a kid who loves to play billiards, this is a fun cake to make!
How to Make a Pool Table Cake:
Like I said, this is a fairly simple cake to put together.
You’ll need to bake one 2 layer round cake and one batch of cupcakes. Use a cake mix or any recipe you like.
Frosting colors you will need:
- Dark Purple
- Orange/Red
- Deep Red
- Green
- Black (or really dark brown)
- Blue
- Orange
- Yellow
- White (lots of white)
Then you will want to print out numbers to go on each of the pool balls. Here is a PDF with pool balls on it that you can print and then cut the numbers out of. You can also use it to match colors for the frosting:
Print Here: Pool Ball Numbers
You will frost the main one white and then use the color of the stripe for the middle in whatever color matches the numbered ball you are making it (like red/orange for my number 11)
Then you will make each of the pool ball cupcakes. The striped ones you will want to frost white first, then add a stripe (I used a small ziplock bag to pipe the frosting on and then smoothed it with a knife).
Then add the numbers by adding a bit of frosting to the back of them and sticking them on.
And you’re all set!
Hope you love this pool table cake and the pool ball cupcakes.
